Review of Lorex LW2002W Digital Portable Wireless Surveillance System
One of the most difficult aspects of choosing a
security camera is deciding how to monitor it. Unless an entire system is
purchased, you have the option of hooking the camera up to any number of
different receivers, and you can choose between viewing the video on a TV,
on a computer, online, etc. You then have to make sure that you are near
whatever receiver you have chosen in order to view the live feeds.
The Lorex LW2002W Digital Portable Color LCD
Wireless Surveillance System provides a receiver for you that is able to be
taken with you from room to room in order to monitor the camera. As the most
portable surveillance system available, the Lorex Surveillance System
provides you with all of the hardware you need – monitor, cameras, etc – so
that you can watch the things that are important to you from as far as 450
feet away.

Pros
The Lorex Surveillance System is portable and
versatile. Few other security cameras on the market today come with their
own portable monitor to allow you to view the images from the camera from
any place within 450 feet of the camera.
The Lorex Surveillance System is also one of the
few small, portable monitoring systems that comes with its own low/no light
nightvision modes. Low light is able to continue to receive clear black and
white imagery. Finally, the entire Lorex Surveillance System can be hooked
up to standard televisions, DVR, and other monitoring tools, and is not
limited for use on the wireless portable receiver.
Cons
Despite its label as a surveillance system, the
Lorex Surveillance System is essentially a baby monitor. It provides you
with the tools you need to watch over any room, but its primary use will be
to watch over your child during its growing years. It is designed to be part
of a complicated CCTV system or any in home security force.
Another issue with the system is that because the
450 foot radius, while large for a portable monitor, is still somewhat
limiting. Data is not sent over the web, so the monitor will only work
within the radius defined for it. Also, the night lighting on the small
monitor can be difficult to see, though the quality is such that it should
suffice for most people’s needs.
Overall Impressions
The Lorex Surveillance System is quite good for its
most common use – watching over your child. But as a general security tool
it becomes less useful. If you are looking for a high tech baby monitor that
will help you watch over your child’s safety, this may easily be the device
you are looking for, but if you are looking for a portable way to monitor
your belongings you may wish to look elsewhere.
